It's official

I haven't posted here in agesss, so here's an update on the major things happening in my life. I'm going to the US next Spring, it's official. Air tickets have been bought. I'm flying off in December, on the 25th with my family. We'll be arriving in LA, then spending about a week in california. After that, my family is flying back and I'm heading on to the university of florida. I'm planning to take some cool general ed-type courses (the kind they don't have in schools here, e.g. anthropology), so I'm sure that'll be fun! My advisor also managed to rig me up with lots of amazing research opportunities there so I am super excited. Academics aside, I'm definitely planning to travel a bit, e.g., various cities in florida, surrounding islands, mexico (?), northeastern states.

That said, I'll probably be starting a blog to keep you updated on my life in the US. So remember to ask me about it! I promise to keep it interesting :)

p.s. I am blogging in class now as a group presents. My group presented earlier this morning. I'm still surprised we managed to wing it without any group meetings, and with 2 completely MIA groupmates (we suspect one of them died because he did not respond to any emails, meet any deadlines, and best - he didn't even turn up today).

New scrapbooking store in Raffles City basement: PaperMarket!
It's the biggest scrapbooking store I've seen around so far! And everything is so inviting, it's hard to leave empty handed. All scrapbooking stores are very enticing, but somehow this is MORE, you know? Pricy though, so I only bought one thing. But believe me, you just want to bring the whole store home *drools*
I bought the most usable thing for me - pretty masking tape! And I'm such a sucker for packaging, this is in a ziplock bag!! Just like food from Muji. Which I know, seems silly for paper tape. But now your tape will never get dusty!

This is the leaked single from Muse's latest album (out in September!) There's some glaringly obvious Queen-influences, especially with the whole rock "orchestral" thing. But i thought the random classical piano rendition of Chopin was an interesting touch, and the mysterious middle-eastern flavoured melodic interludes.

Guys, it is 5.21am and I am awake. I think it's the milk tea I drank at the HK cafe (the last time I had the milk tea, I slept at 6am...I have no idea what they put in the drink!). Perhaps it's also the mild depression after sending the dancers off at the airport. Perhaps it's the post-humous admiration for and sympathy towards MJ after watching too many of his music videos and interviews on youtube. I think his story is so captivating because he's like a walking conundrum -- black/white, man/child, straight/gay, male/female, hero/victim, saint/sinner, human/monster, pauper/king, man/god. He's just so enigmatic and controversial. The kind of person that makes you stop and think, makes you question yourself, your judgements, your assumptions. It's kind of the same way Adam Lambert pushes the boundaries and teases the public -- though I'm not trying to put adam on the same level as MJ here, haha. But definitely, these are two people who were born to be on stage and bring their music to the world.

Back to the sleeplessness, perhap it's also the nervous uncertainty after reading the email from ofm about the closure of the dance hall due to a h1n1 case in school. What do you do when you get an email from the school authorities telling you that the place where your cca trains is closed because someone who tested positive for h1n1 was there last weekend and so they have to close the place for disinfection? And you have training tomorrow (technically, today) and you don't know if you should cancel training and find some way to inform everyone in time so they don't make a wasted trip down to school, or spend the day sourcing for an alternative location? All this while realizing that the decision lies solely with you because the rest of your exco is overseas? And while trying to figure out a way to get a decent choreography out by 22 Jul...with NO venue for any practices? AND while grappling with the dangerous realization that you were in that very place on BOTH saturday AND sunday last weekend, and the entire competing dance group was there for five hours on sunday and they just left on a plane for europe (thereby, bringing the flu virus with them on the plane).

The worst thing about being up so late is that you start to think too much. I'm probably making a big deal out of the cca thing...but I'm nervous because there's no one to turn to!!

But I guess the best thing about being up in the wee hours of the morning is the random surfing on the internet...and then you come across precious gems like:

By the way, eggy if you read this in time...I found out what naumi is! It's a luxury boutique hotel and the name was so familiar to me (that day when we were at bras basah complex) because I did a big project on the marketing of boutique hotels in Singapore for my module 2 terms ago!! Alexander Rybak - Fairytale

Alexander Rybak from Oslo won the Eurovision 2009 with this folksy-pop song called Fairytale. Our prof showed us this video in class just before we left for the trip and it already left a bit of an impression on me. He's pretty huge in Scandinavia. I saw his posters everywhere in shopping malls and music stores...and heard the instantly recognisable Fairytale in many places. Personally, I prefer his other songs, like Kiss and Tell or Funny Little World.

Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love

Ciccy and I got a big kick out of singing and gesturing this song during our ride on the Flam railway. I went a bit ballistic when I heard this song on the radio while grocery shopping in the supermarket at Geilo (Yay-low), and then again while buying non-fat yoghurt ice-cream at a 7-11 store in Bergen.

The Rasmus - In the Shadows

This song is on the list because of Rifai's amazing story about how his friend went to a Rasmus concert in KL. (The Rasmus is Finnish). She had front row tickets...one thing led to the next...and somehow she managed to hook up with the lead guitarist. 6 months later, his friend got married to the band member and had a baby. This ALL happens while she's still in uni...It IS possible to marry a rockstar. Haha.

Katy Perry - I Kissed A Girl

This song is here because the American guy, who we bumped into at the Stockholm hostel AND the Helsinki hostel kept humming this song. 3 days after returning home, the song is STILL stuck in my head. (One thing I've learnt thru staying at the hostels is that you can ALWAYS recognise an American just by the sheer amount of noise he/she makes. Americans are loud and obnoxious.)

HELLO WORLD!! I am typing this from a hotel in Copenhagen, Denmark! Managed to rig my laptop up to the internet using the LAN cable and decided to just say hi to all you guys in Singapore. Revamped Bookshelf

So after an entire week of procrastinating, I finally got down to revamping the boring old bookshelf in my room. It's something that I've been meaning to do since months ago, but never had the time to due to the hectic school schedule + Operation GPA. Before I talk about my bookshelf, may I just announce to the world that Operation GPA was a great success! My grades jumped way beyond my expectations...pulling my cumulative gpa up by 0.27 points -- which is a cause for celebration! Now, I am a bit more hopeful about graduating with some kind of "credit" and also less doubtful, more confident of my own intellectual/academic capabilities. It's quite a miracle, considering many of the extra commitments I had this past term (e.g. RA/TA commitments).

Anyways, on to the shelf. Basically, I have this ugly old bookshelf in my room that holds all my textbooks, reference books, notes, handouts, notebooks, etc. And I wanted to give it a fresh new look. If you know me well enough, you should know that I love to paint things in my room/decorate my room. My bedroom walls have undergone several design changes. From plain white, to whimsical kid sillouhettes, to white/light purple chunks, to white/light purple chunks with random quotes and frame designs in black. My toilet dresser has a stenciled design done with light purple paint. I decided it was about time to give the ugly old bookshelf a makeover.

Materials:

Off-white paint (this was leftover paint from my last painting project)
Painting tools, e.g. big brushes, small brushes, rollers, paint tray
Fancy wrapping paper (i got mine on discount from prints)
Tape (to secure the wrapping paper to the shelf)

After two coats of paint, I pasted the pretty paper onto the back of the shelf and yay! New shelf. Painting the bottom third of the shelf required some skilful contorting of my body into awkward positions. Good thing I had practise from dance. Here's the shelf (empty) sitting in front of my bed...

And here's the shelf with things on it! Maybe you'll recognize some of these books. There's Campbell, Kotler & Armstrong, Coon & Mitterer, Sloman, Mauder, Ramsden, and the ubiquitous McGraw-Hill books.

500 Days of Summer

Check out the movie trailer for 500 Days of Summer, starring Zooey Deschanel (did I get the spelling right? btw, i recently found out she's engaged to dcfc's ben gibbard? wtf, but kinda cute.) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (the geeky guy from 3rd rock from the sun and 10 things I hate about you! he was damn cute). It's funny because JGL is now all grown up and less skinny...and it's scary because I think he looks ALOT like Heath Ledger (RIP) now that he's past the stages of puberty...and weren't they acting as brothers on 10 things? The casting directors were good!

Anyway, 500 days looks like one of those romantic comedies that I will like! One of those Juno-type flicks. And because they have to be unique, they have a movie blog, instead of a normal movie site. Check it out!

We can always trust Muji to come up with something original, yet still functional, like the Chronotebook! Instead of having lined or grid or calendar squared or blank pages like normal notebooks, the Chronotebook has an analog clock in the middle of each page. I like how you get to plan your day around this clock, but there's still quite alot of blank space of scribbling notes and useless doodling.

Doctors confirm woman's imaginary third arm

A 64-year-old woman has reported to doctors at Geneva University Hospital the presence of a pale, milky-white and translucent third arm.
After examining the case, the woman's neurologist, Asaid Khateb of the hospital's experimental neurophysiology laboratory, called the rare phenomenon credible.

The arm appeared to the woman a few days after suffering a stroke, doctors said.

But this case of what is known as a supernumerary phantom limb (SPL) is a genuine head-scratcher.

The upshot is that the woman can use the apparitional extremity to relieve very real itches on the cheek. It cannot penetrate solid objects.

She does not always perceive the arm but "retrieves" it when needed, doctors told the Swiss news agency.

It is nevertheless the first case known to doctors of a person being able to feel, see and deliberately move a limb that doesn't exist. The findings are published in the Annals of Neurology.

Pinpointing
Khateb and his colleagues examined the patient's brain using functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a tool that allows doctors to see whether the brain is truly stimulated, and to pinpoint where. In this case, the investigations revealed that the woman actually experienced what she described.

Researchers instructed the woman to move her right hand. As expected, the motor cortex and visual processing areas in the left side of her brain became mobilised.

The same effects were observed to a lesser extent when the woman simply imagined moving her right hand. Imaginary movements of the woman's paralysed left hand prompted the same activity in the brain, but on the right side.

But when doctors asked her to move her phantom arm, her brain reacted as though the arm really existed and could be moved. In addition, the patient's visual cortex was also activated, indicating the she actually saw the imaginary limb.

And when she was instructed to scratch her cheek, regions of the brain relating to touch were activated.

Mystery
Khateb said the exact cause of the imaginary arm remains a mystery. Supernumerary limbs are rare. There are only nine known cases of a patient both feeling and seeing an arm.

"Existing evidence from stroke-elicited SPLs convincingly implicates the mismatch between the subject's well-established sensorimotor representations and a suddenly aberrant pattern of communication between the brain and the paralysed limb," the authors wrote.

They said it could represent a missing link between classical phantom limbs and phenomena such as out-of-body experiences.

Phantom limbs are more commonly associated with people who have had an amputation – between 50 and 80 per cent of people who have had body parts removed suffer from it. In most cases it is painful, according to a 1984 article published in a scientific journal called the Clinical Journal of Pain.

"Ultimately however these conditions might offer a unique way to understand how the brain constructs a normal experience of bodily awareness and the self," they concluded.

My first exam begins tomorrow, still a bit of mugging and reading left to do (like analyzing organizational failures in the Queensland Health system), before i go to bed...wish me luck!

Rushed home just in time to catch Adam on tv today (yes, i actually rushed home to catch a tv show). I think the song Mad World is grossly overplayed, but Adam manages to put his magic into everything. So here goes!

Incredible!! It's really worth the load. I've never really appreciated singing as an art...like I usually listen to music for lyrical genius, for an infectious melody, for a catchy beat, for nice vibes, or for heart-bursting emotion. But this guy's mastery of his voice is the real deal. This guy is like...a born singer. And he seems so humble about everything too.

Third Nipple

Christine introduced me to the concept of the third nipple today while we were mugging at starbucks. I must have been living under a rock all these years coz I've NEVER EVER in my life heard of this thing called a third nipple. I thought she was kidding, until I went online to wiki it. She got the facts a bit wrong though, the third nipple is not a hormonal development that happens during pregnancy. I think its more of a genetic defect kinda thing. Apparently 1 in 18 humans have it, which is OMG to me. HOW MANY OF YOU PEOPLE OUT THERE HAVE THIS MYSTICAL THIRD NIPPLE and didn't tell me about it?? (Or trip nip, as they like to call it)

Made pretty lanyards! =D Ribbon was bought at the scrapbook store, Made with Love, and all the other hooks buttons etc. were gotten at Spotlight =)=) Luckily i already have such a huge stash of embroidery thread at home.

Was surprisingly fun to make, not on my part, but his. You already know i love doing this kinda things, gives me a crazy high. Feel so pleased with it cos it's so pretty! =D=D Plus functional, bonus, lol. And the pink button that was supposed to be decorative ended up being functional too, cos it was sewn directly onto the press stud underneath. He was value-adding to the design, lol =D The whole matching lanyards thing is admittedly really gay, but never mind. Can't wait for more projects to come along! =D=D

These are a couple of youtube channel links that I have bookmarked overtime. You can get your American Ivy League education online now! Basically, there's a trend of american universities uploading their lectures onto youtube. Watching these videos is almost like being right there in class, only you cannot ask the prof questions, and you don't have to do homework! This video is nuts!! You guys SO have to watch this. I had no idea you could train sheep to do this kinda thing. It's seriously like ??!?! these people boggle the mind!

This video has to be seen to be believed. Some guys strapped LED covered vests on sheep and then had the dogs herd them in specific patterns to create ridiculous art on a hillside in Wales. They even play a game of Pong and recreate the Mona Lisa using different colored LEDs on sheep in a pen. You just have to watch it to understand. Then, I think we'll all agree, sheep: not just for sex anymore.

Hairloom and Caramel salon-cafe-home at shaw towers, an eclectic cafe set up by 4 men. Quite difficult to not give off the gay vibe, which they do, very strongly. All cupcakes baked by one of the guys too, who learnt to bake from his mother and grandmother. Initially i thought it was just another one of those pretty cafes set up by people who frequently read Decor8 and OhJoy!, one of those people who go around looking for eclectic furniture in an effort to give their cafe that mish-mash look which is so popular and so pretty but kinda unoriginal now. But after visiting their blog, i'm even more impressed with them! Turns out they did source for old furniture, but more than just being fortunate (or rich) enough to find all those pretty chairs, they actually had them upholstered and repainted! Kudos for the taste and vision then =) Don't have a photo of the chairs, but you can see the before and after at their website. Amazing, even though i know they probably had it done, but still, amazing =)

Cupcakes all handmade by that one guy in a pink tshirt. They do lunch and dinner too. And pricey haircuts at the adjoining salon.The guys painted the wall behind themselves!THE BEST tiramisu to be had there, we've got to go sometime =)=) Smooth, creamy and baileys-soaked, so glad i didn't pick a cupcake. Although the cupcakes were really gorgeous too.Most photos from Aramia. Thanks, hope you don't mind.

PS. Another giant rainbow! Photo is unedited this time, cos it wouldn't have been an improvement, haha. But this felt really close this time, because I was on the ground level, almost as if walking further front, you'd walk yourself closer to the rainbow. Outside raffles city, so pretty! =)

I've never really been a big fan of American Idol. Good idol participants come and go. Some are really good, but I usually don't like their style or voice. People like Clay Aiken or Carrie Underwood or David Archuleta. But this season...there is the greatness, GREATNESS, that is Adam Lambert. (I think the last time I ever liked a reality show star so much was Lukas Rossi from Rockstar Supernova. But Adam owns Lukas, no question about it).

Adam Lambert auditioned for American Idol in San Francisco, and made an insane risk by singing one of the world's greatest songs, Bohemian Rhapsody. It's such a waste that the judges stop him when he's only about 20 seconds into the song. Nonetheless...it's an amazing rendition. And you've definitely gotta give props to anyone who chooses Bohemian Rhapsody as his audition piece.

Then 2 weeks ago, he decided to sing Rolling Stones' Satisfaction on stage. Which is ALSO amazing, considering it's only like their first week in Hollywood. His ending note is O_O. Whoa.

And in the latest episode of American Idol, he sings Michael Jackson's Black and White. Sexy mindblowing stuff. And his confidence on stage is amazing.

His vocal range is nuts. He dresses nice and from what I see on screen, he has a really nice personality too. I hope he goes really far...like not just in American Idol, but that he stays in the music industry for the long haul (instead of fizzle out like some other idols).

Also, I think he looks a bit like Elvis Presley...it's the eyes!

I've never seen such a huge rainbow in my life, and it could have been bigger in the photo except that i didn't want to step out into the drizzle. Of course, i tweaked the photo a little to make the colours more obvious, because grey isn't really the best background for these ephemeral things. But the moment was magical, and even more so because it only lasted long enough for me to take this picture. It started fading away in a matter of minutes.

I find it very strange that something so pretty can only be seen in such grey skies (not even dark stormy grey, just a very mild grey). The combination doesn't seem ideal. Is the muted effect supposed to accent its evanescence? I bet something very philosophical could be made out of this.

These grades may not appear spectacular to you...but they are really the best news I've heard all week. Business processes is the bane of my current school term (I actually secretly enjoy the commonly detested computer as an analysis tool). BP is like the physics of business, and I never liked physics. I would have been so so so grateful for even being average in class...so now, above average (by 6%) is like :) YAY! Especially when you're in your prof's smarter section with idiot GPA 4-ers. Lucky thing, I'm good at math! I think for this module, I'd be happy with a B...a B+ would be a bonus! Banking on other more interesting modules to pull my gpa up.

I really just had to post this before I sleep. That's if I can even get to sleep now with the awesome news -- Maddy is above average in BP. Woohoo.

To all my beautiful friends, HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY! Saw tons of happy couples in cityhall today, happy girls parading their bouquets or teddy bears. If you are attached, I wish you and your partner all the love in the world (the kind of love they sing about in songs)...if you are single, I also wish you all the love in the world. Haha.I know I have been m-i-a in many of your lives recently - I've been super busy juggling all my commitments (school, reports, projects, concerts, dance, tuition, research, resting, family, friends). I really haven't had a good rest since last december -- with all the concert prep and whatnot. School-wise, I have my reasons - this term is Operation GPA, and I'm serious about it and been working really hard. And i'm not complaining at all because i really love what i'm doing and i want these things very badly. Don't worry I haven't forgotten you and I still love you very very much!

I came across this video while surfing youtube...It's the walrus and the carpenter from the disney's alice in wonderland! I remember watching this movie decades ago and being genuinely deeply disturbed by the eerie scene at the dining table with the walrus and the oyster babies. After my first traumatic experience, every time they replay this movie on TV, I will refuse to watch the Walrus and the Carpenter scene. (Every thing else is fine). This movie is so dark!

But of course...I'm still all game for the upcoming version with Mr Johnny Depp!

Must show you guys!! Feel very proud of myself!! Dr tapan gave me 4 for my final waxup! Feels like such a rarity in my rp book =D=D=D For the rest of you, the teeth are acrylic and come in a set, but we gotta do the gums from scratch, and arrange the teeth in the gums (which is a lot more difficult than it sounds, because they're really picky about it. After a while you feel like you really can't tell whether the teeth are even at the same height/angle/space-time continuum anymore). They're carved out of wax and are gonna be transformed to acrylic too. This is on its way to becoming a real denture!On a side note, saw this at city hall yesterday. Think it's part of chingay. Looks quite nice actually. Horsepower to the max =)

The Chinese teenager cannot even talk – but has to communicate with different types of GIGGLE.

Xu Pinghui, 13, has stumped doctors ever since she started laughing when she developed a fever as an eight-month-old baby.

Her parents are now desperate to find a cure.

Mum Yang Longying said: “Ever since then she has been laughing uncontrollably.

Her dad Xu Weiming added: “There is no happiness for us. Seeing her laughing we feel even sadder than if she were crying.”

But Pinghui has been given new hope after doctors said her brain’s frontal lobe may have been damaged by the fever.

Hort Park

These photos are from the visit i made in december. HortPark is such a pretty place, and surprisingly big! Up on the hill and hidden amongst the towering industrial buildings, it feels very quiet and peaceful, a little spot hidden away from the rest of the world. So much so that we went back again the next sunday evening, just to lie on the lawn and read a book =) It really doesn't feel like you're in singapore anymore! Think it's gonna be a popular place on my relax-and-do-nothing list.

One cool thing about the place is that they've got many differently themed little gardens like the cacti garden, the asian garden (grass planted in the yin-yang symbol!) etc. And it's quite a brilliant thing, because they get all the different landscaping companies to sponsor (i'm assuming) a garden however they want it, so HortPark gets free designers and maintenance and plants, and the companies get free advertisement. Everybody's happy =) And i must say, they did a really impressive job, not only with the blooms but also the designs. Pretty interesting.

Merry Christmas everyone! (Mr Christmas above was seen at vivocity! Is he a temp?) Yes I know, way off season, but oh well, whatever. Have so many photos to share! But i've been too lazy, lol. Today blogging finally seemed more attractive than carving out gingiva for rp (gums, for the rest of you), so this post shall have a lot of random things!
Finally managed to make the cream puffs and cream cheese filling (thanks liane! =D) that i've been meaning to for months! Really easy and yummy, yay =D And deceptively sophisticated! And did i mention yummy?? Great Christmas presents. Ooh, but it was funny cos i was carrying a tray of these and giving it out to my friends. But our church generally has a Christmas lunch buffet, so all these grandmas thought i was helping the catering and just helped themselves to my cream puffs -_- And they move real quick for old people. Luckily i made extras.
My daddy dug out this little tripod from i dunno where. So cute and tiny right! Apparently it's been around for ages, he just forgot about it. Well, it's mine now. Thing is, while it's very cute and all, it doesn't seem that useful.. because it's so tiny, it's only really good for tabletop shots. But oh well, guess i'll just take more photos of small things then. Next time we need to take self-timing shots of group photos, just call me. Same height as my handphone!This fish was seen at the basement of Cathay. I've never seen dead fish in this kinda ponds before, and this one was a huge fish! like, size of my hand. It just lay there on its side looking very miserable, and you know how these fish are very flat? Made it look even more dead and miserable. We contemplated telling somebody (don't dead fish cause all the other fish to die too??) but we had no idea who, so well, we moved on.

Haha, how rare is it that the traffic light turns red just as your car stops beside a horrific accident. People can't even call you a hog for stalling traffic. Jokes aside, I wouldn't wanna be the dude in the car though, i don't know if you can see it from this picture, but not only did it flip over, it is -pretty- messed up. It's not that I'm in love with anyone in particular right now, and neither is it that anyone in particular is in love with me (not that i'm aware of), but i saw this thing on someone's livejournal while blog surfing and i thought it was pretty...um...thought-provoking? And decided that it was blog-worthy. Aiya, whatever, just read it. I like, "as we all know, the heart is the centre of the body, but it beats on the left, maybe that's why the heart is not always right."

During long quiet car rides, my mind always wanders. Sometimes I think about things like love and how relationships can be so complicated (not so much from personal experience, but from observations of other people's relationships). And how some relationships can really mess up lives. And how common it is nowadays for relationships to fail and marriages to end. And then I feel so lucky that my parents are still together and more or less quite happy and peaceful. I think it's amazing how they've been with each other for so long. I probably don't give them enough credit for that. It's difficult enough finding the right partner, then you have to date, and like each other enough to get married, and then have kids, and do adult things like earn money and buy houses and pay taxes. On top of that, you have to deal with good-for-nothing siblings, unreasonable bosses and angsty kids who will never like you enough. All this while trying to make sure that you're doing the right thing; and trying not to think about "what happens if i'm making all the wrong decisions?" etc, etc. Okay, I think I am rambling. Shall stop here.

Talking about HMV purchases, I am totally loving my new cd. Sigur Ros' new album Með suð í eyrum við spilum end , translated as "with a buzz in our ears we play endlessly". Indecipherable icelandic lyrics but totally magical and beautiful nonetheless. They really nail that bittersweet thing that I like, sorrowful melodies that are strangely uplifting. Perfect soundtrack for some kind of discovery channel documentary with graceful birds gliding across open skies, wild animals galloping across wide plains, schools of exotic fish swimming in the ocean...you know, a magnificent mother earth type thing. The video above is for the song Ára bátur which is pretty classic. It gets really heart-bursting from about 7:00 onward. They oddly kinda remind me of a more ethereal, subdued, less angsty Muse. I think it's the falsetto.

I just found a full stream of their band documentary Heima on google videos. Will watch it soon...right after my last 2 exams. (Theory application: Self-reinforcement occurs whenever someone has control over a reinforcer but delays it until a self-set goal has been completed)

This one's for you my friend. Some excerpts from the journal articles that ferris passed to me for the lit review. Basically the article i was talking about is about the Self-expansion Model of Love which is based on 3 principles:

People seek to expand the self.
One way they seek to do so is by attempting to include others in the self through close relationships.
People seek situations and experiences that have become associated with experiences of expansion of self.

And people fall in love because of:

Desirability: Perceived degree of potential expansion of self that is possible thru a close relationship with that particular other.
Probability: Perceived probability of actually obtaining that expansion with other (probability that one could actually form and maintain a close relationship with this particular other)

-----> Edit on 17/11: And the above points make alot of sense. For instance, some distant eye-candy crush would be high on desirability, low on probability. And your platonic friend would be low on desirability, high on probability. Makes a bit of sense, no? So when you find someone who scores high on desirability AND probability, then BINGO! You're one lucky dude.

When one initially falls in love, the perceived opportunity for expansion is very great.

But once established, the rate of expansion inevitably slows down.

The self-expansion model imples that a possible way that couple might avoid the typical decline in satisfaction and love over time would be by associating the partner or the relationship with experiences of expanding.

Once relationship partners can no longer gain substantial expansion from the development of the relationship (they know each other well), by engaging in expanding activities togehter, they may give the relationship an aura of expansion. Activities that are self-expanding are those that are novel or arousing.

So in the bridge study, male subjects found a woman more attractive when she was met on a scary suspension bridge than when the same woman was met on a safe foot bridge. Meaning that the woman encountered on the suspension bridge may seem to offer more self-expansion, or feelings of arousal.

I got about a little over 2 hours of sleep last night. Stayed up till late compiling, editing, fluffing up, printing the consulting report. Bring on my o level summary skillzz, yo! After that I couldn't fall asleep coz of all the adrenaline from completing the report. Really proud of what our group has come up with...one of the better groups I've had here in smu (excluding the 2 uninvolved foreigners who have done nothing but cause trouble). Here's a little video that we played at the end of our 9 o'clock news show thing. It's supposed to be quite funny. 3 presentations and 1 report down. 3 more reports and 2 dance performances to go! I am Superwoman! (one of my grpmates actually called me this...i think i'm supposed to be flattered.)

On an unrelated note, bidding for mods is giving me the biggest headache. I've changed my schedule about a million times in the past few days. My plan for no morning lessons has failed...I have to come back to school on Mondays at friggin 8.30 for FT. But at least it'll be with the rest of the IDCFTG and it's only for half a term. And well, I have a 3 day week now, so that's something to look forward to.

And on an even more unrelated note, it seems I always end up being the middleman, regardless of situation (work or non-work related).

Razzle dazzle rose

Razzle dazzle rose was the closing song, and it was truly magical. The kind that makes the hairs on your arm stand. Hearing it live was so amazing, you have no idea, the album one is totally incomparable. The other songs were pretty much like how they sound on the album, which is pretty good for a live gig. Anyway, the entire concert ended much too soon. An 80min performance, and when razzle dazzle rose ended, we weren't sure whether there was gonna be an encore or not. Evidently not the case, we made a mad dash to join the queue for the autographs. Lucky we were quick, still had to wait an entire hour before making it to the table!

Funny moment when the band took a break in the middle of the performance. There'd been an announcement saying that there wasn't an intermission, so when this old-eurasian-bar-singer-looking dude in leathers came on stage, we thought he was some middle act. He even took up one of the guitars and fiddled with it, so the crowd kept cheering madly for him. Only for him to put the guitar back down five minutes later and return backstage, whereby Camera Obscura came back out. He was the guitar tuner!

Yayness!! Bought a crossword book at Times today after brunch. Was with Chan cos Maddy had to leave. We got the better but not posh one in the end, Maddy, so we went to Spotlight to buy pretty paper and Chan helped me wrap it! =D=D Happiness!! =D=D=D

I evidently had the right person with me. Handy with a blade and sharp creases! And it's not senget (? uh, not straight). Didn't realise until now how straight the positioning was. We shamelessly took over half the table at Spotlight, where they generally hold craft classes. But no one chased us away anyway, too busy painting sinister dolphins, so yay!
So mysterious, nobody will know what book I'm reading! And I won't even know which is the front page! The excitement will kill me.
Prettiest crossword book around! =D=D Think I'm gonna use die hardener on the corners of the book so they won't get smushy. Chan said if I used die hardener on the entire book, I'd get a hardcover book for the price of a paperback -_-
Then I had all these scraps of pretty cardpaper, whereby a brilliant idea hit me.
Pretty magnetic bookmarks!! =D=D=D I had these magnet strips lying around at home, and I've been meaning to make myself some for a long time now, just couldn't think of what design. Was listening to the Beatles on my way home from dance today, and i have to say, their songs are magic. I was literally trying to hold myself from humming along too loudly, trying not to smile too much -- or people will think i'm weird. Our world is full of anger, sadness, stress, emptiness, and quiet desperation. I feel like people are always struggling, reaching for something more, never content. Not trying to be emo here, but dunno if I've mentioned it here on this blog but it's really depressing just looking at the msn nicks on my msn contact list. "Tired", "Stressssed", "SWAMPED & STRESSED & SICK", "3 REPORTS, 2 MIDTERMS, 1 PRESENTATION", "PRESENTATIONS", "SICK AGAIN", "I HATE WEEK 9", "CAN'T WAIT FOR WEEK 9 TO END", "SHIT WEEK"...it was even worse during week 7, the midterm period. Why can't everyone just chill out, be happy with what they have and =). I really don't see the point in getting so worked up over all these things. Getting stressed just makes things worse...think egg would agree with me here. This is why we are friends right? LOL

I mentioned my observation to some people and coerced them into changing their depressing msn nicks into happy nicks. "This is a cheery msn nick for maddy" Haha.In times like these, i think, all we need is love.

I spent last Friday at AWWA in Hougang with iBig. They planned some music session thing with the special ed (mildly autistic) kids there, which turned out pretty awesome. It was my first time ever interacting with autistic kids, so I really didn't know what to expect -- they were alot more extroverted and friendly than I had imagined. Somehow, I had the impression that they'd be really quiet and antisocial. I have this mental image of an autistic kid, sitting in a corner, creating genius-level works of art, and he'ss oblivious to everything around him, sort of living in his own world. But they were all very warm and welcoming, more than us visitors anyway. When I say warm, I mean warm. Like there were kids who literally ran up to us saying hello, introducing themselves, asking us for our names. There was this particular kid who ran up to Xyvill (17 yr old guy from myanmar, he named himself that) and asked to "bao bao". So Xyvill just picked him up, carried him and rocked the kid around. All this happens like, in the first minute that we step into the acitivity room -- even before we got a chance to talk to the lady in charge of the kids.

Really gotta give credit to the social workers at the centre. After about 2 hours of playtime with the kids, we were completely out of it. We have 2 more sessions with the kids...looking forward to our next! I left the place feeling all "i've made a positive difference on earth", which is a really nice feeling to have.

Just watched a couple of videos of this New York standup comedian called Demitri Martin on youtube. Hilarious one-liner type jokes! According to wikipedia, Martin attended Yale and then NYU Law School on full scholarship, then dropped out a year before graduating to pursue a career in comedy. He is also known for showing his ambidextrous talents in performances. His hobbies include constructing palindromes. Intelligent, witty, too-cool-for-school, ambidextrous, geeky hobbies...my kind of guy huh. HAHA. He has to have the skinny geeky white jewish boy thing going on too.

Last night chan msged me to ask if i could go over and help glue tiny plywood cubes into slightly less tiny plywood cubes. Exciting stuff! The cubes are gonna be glued into a further structure. And if you look closely enough, there's some business going on with the woodgrain. Patterny smarty-pants stuff that i'm too lazy to explain now lol. But basically chan came up with idea --> she's the boss of this project --> i'm the boss' friend!

This is what we managed to achieve. 57 cubes. Suddenly that doesn't sound like a lot anymore chan -___- She needed a total that amounted to thousands, i kid you not. But never mind, it looks like a huge mountain of cubes from here! And it was really fun, i even got one for keeps =D Anytime you need me again, chan =)=)

This video is the mtv for 5 years time by the band Noah and the Whale. Christine sent me this song a few months ago but I only just saw the mtv -- it's rather cute. Love the bright costumes, karaoke words, the cheesy dance moves and the whistling! (reminds of young folks by PBY) They really nailed the whole quirky indie brit-poprock thing. Haha.

I'd prefer to refrain from using cliches in this blog, but it's quite apt to begin this post by with the phrase, "Time flies". Can't believe its already the end of week 4...soon it'll be midterm, then exams, then hols, then new term...repeat. Since I have some time now before heading off to nus ucc for chee's dance concert (and having already completed my assignments for the week -- yay productivity), I shall post random pics to chronicle my past few weeks.

Awesome lighting at esplanade's concert hall for the dcfc concert. Funny incident: chris and I spent the bulk of our time laughing at this guy directly in front of me who was very very very high throughout the concert. Like, he kept bobbing up and down quite rigorously and screaming out lyrics at the top of his voice. About halfway thru the thing, i suddenly realise, HOLY SHIT i know that guy! Haha..it was kevin and then the overenthusiasm made so much sense.

Met lotsa jc ppl there, including shib who came up to me and said, "I KNEW I would see you here!" We met up recently and she recalled how i was the one who introed ben gibbert to her. Like years ago when she came over to my place and was looking thru my cd collection. I believe tt was during the whole omg-i-love-seth phase.

The people who have become a gigantic part of my life -- in a scary yet heartwarming way.

Um...these nails only lasted for a few hours on me. I went straight home to take them off. Too bright, too bright...Very pontianak-y.

Friend, may you one day be ready enough to meet THE MENTOR. Haha...the title is Thai Horror Film-worthy. Some people you'll have to wait for, but you will never have to wait for me. LOL. ;)

This was the random spontaneous 3V reunion...cons was there earlier too. Interestingly enough, even without bx being there, she managed to take up quite a substantial amount of our conversation. Above you have future lawyers, doctors, dentists, biz women. We didn't do too bad afterall. Not too shabby. Koh siew yong should be proud.

Word of advice: Never ever go for fish foot therapy. It is a complete waste of money. It was definitely not relaxing, and my foot didnt feel significantly smoother after the session. The first 10 minutes of sitting in the tub was ridiculously tortuous. The feeling of dozens of little fish nibbling at your toes...is not a pleasant feeling. And after a half hour of staring at the tiny fish darting around the pool - I became slightly dizzy and nauseous. We had to take our minds off the queer ticklish sensations by having very insightful conversation about school, friends, love, travel, camping...so on.

Everyone's flying off again. Why so fast!!

Finally have time to post these pictures. It's what we've been doing this term! Dentures, and crowns. Well, we haven't actually gotten to the final product yet, but this is the in between and it's as fun as it looks! =)=)

Jitty and chan came by for lunch =)=) Jitty still looks the same as ever. Once a year is much too little jit!Shiny happy wax =) this entire thing is made of wax, who knew it could get so shiny! Just takes some flaming (<-- dangerous. i've flamed my fingers a coupla times alr, and damn does it hurt), and bit of soap+water. This is on its way to becoming a denture =D=D It's so shiny it already looks like acrylic =D This is to make a special tray for taking impressions. For making crowns. Reason why i'm showing this, is because aluminium foil is magical! The foil is used to cover the wax base, because the material used to make the special tray sets in an exothermic reaction. Lotsa heat produced, don't want the wax to melt into the special tray and contaminate it. Anyway. When you burnish it and burnish it, the foil turns this dull but white-bright silver, and super smooth, like the kind you get chocolate wrapped in! Super addictive way to spend the afternoon.Then boon found the silicon putty unguarded one morning in lab.Hooked onto the magic of replicating body parts, he realized that a finger was not enough! He had to hide in a corner to do this, cos the blue stuff is really expensive. Lab techs always scold us for taking too much. It's a silicon impression material, we use it to take impressions of teeth and stuff cos it's got good detail etc. Then after that you use it as a mould and pour silky rock (the pink stone thing) or whatever in it to make a cast =O Hurhurhur.Lastly, smiley face cookie from david for my birthday! =D=D so cheerful! =D=D Feel happy everybody! =D
